Whole Child Vision

We are strongly committed to our whole child initiatives, maintaining our positive culture, providing well-rounded programming with art, music and PE for all students, and investing in strong collaborative community connections. Our teachers, families, and students are happy here – we have one of the highest retention rates in the district which has allowed our continued growth over these past years.  Our staff is committed to our vision and goes above and beyond with the supports they provide our students and families each and every day.  We want to ensure we are providing the best possible well-rounded education for our students and that we support their development as a whole child!

Character Education & Community Building

At Valverde, we deeply value our Character Education curriculum and our robust Social Emotional Support Team “SEST”- which includes 2 Counselors, a School Social Worker, a School Psychologist,  a Restorative Practice Coordinator, and several other community organization supports. Our entire staff has been trained in Conscious Discipline and Capturing Kids Hearts, and we are deeply committed to helping our students become the best citizens of their community that they can be! We have created a School Family here at Valverde, which is made up of our Class Families.

School Family Meetings

Every Monday we come together as a school community to start the week on a positive note together as a school family. We connect, give shout outs, and discuss our character focus of the week.

Class Family Meetings

Each classroom starts the day with classroom family meeting focused on building the c classroom community and going deeper with the weekly character education focus. Teachers model positive behaviors and teach students ways to respect themselves and others.

We also implement a ton of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) to help students learn positive character traits!

Learn More About Our Social-Emotional Learning Philosophy

At Valverde, our teachers are trained in Conscious Discipline, and creating strong a strong “school family” and loving and supportive “class families.” Our teachers deeply understand students’ brain states, and use mindfulness skills to help support students’ self-regulation.

From Conscious Discipline:

Ask yourself, “Would I rather have children say, ‘What do I get if I’m good?’ or ‘How do I give of my goodness?”School climate impacts all achievement. The culture of a school can foster bullying, blame and cliques, or it can build cooperation, willingness and responsibility.

The School Family builds connections between families and schools, teachers and teachers, teachers and students, and students and students to ensure the optimal development of all.

The School Family is created through routines, rituals and structures and creates a fundamental shift in education and classroom management. Leave coercion, fear and external rewards behind, and step into a world where intrinsic motivation, helpfulness, problem-solving and connection govern your classroom.

At Valverde we believe in the power of connections and building strong relationships.  We strive to do this with our students and with each other.  We have intentional time to build a community in each classroom during our morning family meetings.  We talk about what it means to be a good person for ourselves and for others. We work to establish strong relationships amongst the students in the classroom!

Valverde prioritizes social-emotional learning time for all students everyday, and we have built in intentional times of the day for us to focus on social-emotional learning!  Check out what we are doing!

Greeting

Greeting every student at the door of their classroom to start the day on a positive note!

Good Things

We start each day and meeting at Valverde by sharing good things about our lives. This could be anything related to school or their personal lives. It would be a great activity to bring home to your families as well!

Affirmations (Verbal & Written)

We are helping students in giving and receiving affirmations. This practice is something that helps build strong connections between people and a practice we greatly value within our Valverde school community!

Social Contracts

Every classroom will co-create a social contract that all of the students agree upon in response to the following questions:

  • How do you want to be treated by the teacher/leader?
  • How do you want to be treated by each other?
  • How do you think I teacher/leader want to be treated by you?
  • How do you want to treat each other when there is a conflict?

The 4 Questions

If a student breaks the social contract we are working on helping them to make a better choice. We will ask the following questions:

  • What are you doing?
  • What are you supposed to be doing?
  • Are you doing it?
  • What are you going to do about it?

This would be a great strategy to use with your students at home as well to help them make the right choices for themselves and take ownership in it.

Afirmaciones (verbales y escritas)
